Applicants may be required to provide evidence of being in possession of the licence to practice in the register of the profession concerned, as kept by the relevant regulatory council.

Applicants may be required to provide evidence of work experience following registration with the relevant regulatory council in the proposed area of study or area of specialisation, if applicable. The minimum number of years of experience required shall be indicated at the time of the call for applications.

During the first year of the Course, accepted students may be required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

The Master of Science in Medical Imaging (Ultrasound: Obstetrics and Gynaecology) is a part-time programme designed specifically for radiographers, medical doctors and other health professionals interested in developing skills in performing clinical ultrasound as part of their professional roles. The programme aims to equip you with advanced academic and clinical training in ultrasound imaging, with a focus on obstetrics and gynaecology. Spread over six semesters, you will develop in-depth knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and the scientific principles underpinning ultrasound technology and its role and safe use in obstetric and gynaecological imaging. The course consists of hands-on clinical practice, critical thinking, and research, which will enable you as a graduate to perform, report and interpret diagnostic ultrasound scans confidently. This programme prepares healthcare professionals to contribute to enhanced patient outcomes through expert imaging and interdisciplinary collaboration.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science - M.Sc. - in under the auspices of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the scientific, safety, physical and technological concepts that underpin ultrasound imaging.
  • Propose specifications for the selection of ultrasound devices in relation to clinical requirements, taking into consideration current and future developments.
  • Recognise the ultrasound appearance of normal and pathological conditions.
  • Conduct additional ultrasound imaging when required and propose appropriate action.
  • Manage and organise your time to meet deadlines.
  • Take responsibility for the planning and execution of your learning.

  • compile knowledge in the scientific principles, anatomy, physiology and pathology related to ultrasound imaging and develop advanced practical skills in the imaging field;
  • develop your knowledge in the application and the safe use of devices in ultrasound;
  • assemble the knowledge and evidence-based practice from international flora, to modify, adapt and design local work protocols and procedures in ultrasound imaging;
  • maximise your analytical and critical reflective capacity in the interpretation and evaluation of the results produced from ultrasound examinations;
  • demonstrate competence in performing ultrasound scans and providing a diagnostic report to the referring clinician;
  • discuss complex information related to ultrasound imaging with other health care professionals involved in the management of the patient, with the aim of improving the patients' health status;
  • appreciate the various practices relevant for effective management;
  • use a wide range of skills to work as leaders in complex and challenging environments;
  • demonstrate analytical skills for investigating and analysing quality management issues and suggest solutions; and
  • evaluate critically the rationale underlying management practice.
